Ontario's land transfer tax is a significant consideration for homebuyers in the province, impacting their overall purchase costs. First-time homebuyers may be eligible for a refund, provided they meet certain criteria outlined by the government. This refund applies to various types of property acquisitions, including purchases, gifts, or inheritances. Claiming procedures for the refund can be completed either at the time of registration or through a submission to the Ministry of Finance. The maximum refund amount varies depending on the date of the transaction, with changes effective from January 1, 2017, onwards. 


Notably, there's an exemption for first-time purchasers on the first $368,000 of eligible home value, which can significantly reduce their tax burden.
